Ugh, Pacey you are still so super-hot, if a bit chubby round the face these days…
Alright alright so I am probably the last person in the world to have started watching The Affair. But I refused to watch it for ages for the specific reason that, as a married woman, any mention of affairs of any sort makes me quite nervous.
Most close female friends confess to me at some point, half-joking or not, that they are terrified that their husbands are going to have an affair. They (the wives) are always grumpy, they have got fat and look shit, they don’t put out enough… why would the husbands not stray?
I pass no comment on this, only to say that what I don’t want to spend my evenings doing is watching some bloody man getting his end away with a nubile temptress while his wife and mother of his kids sits about oblivious. Especially if my husband is sitting right next to me.
BUT!!! The Affair is not like that. Why does no-one say? Take every assumption about a story about an affair you’ve got in your head and toss it out of the window because this show isn’t about that. Not like that.
Anyway if you’ve got even half a mind on thinking that you need a new boxed-set, (to give it its correct yet inaccurate and terrible name), The Affair is not what you think it is.
AND it’s got Joshua Jackson in it!! He was such a massive crush of mine when he was in Dawson’s Creek – ranking highly in my list of crushes for the year 1995-2000, alongside Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (series 1-3 only) and Drazic in Heartbreak High. Do you detect a theme of bad-boy/nutter here? I am so predictable.
God knows how long it will take me to start watching Sarah Jessica Parker’s new show, Divorce.
It’s exactly like that! A happily married man has his head turned by a younger, hotter ( so he thinks) woman, screws her and thinks he’s in love.
That said, it’s a brilliant series, unusual in that it has a start, a middle and a proper ending.
You weren’t alone in any of those crushes. I would add Spike in later Buffy and Jordan Catalano from My So-
Love the affair so much- wait til you get to season 2… Although clearly the question is why would Alison have an affair when she’s married to Pacey?!
Ps also loving your blog, thank you xx
The first season is brilliant until the very last episode… Then they pack all this plot in purely to facilitate season 2, which thank goodness is great because you finally see 4 POV’s not just two…
I watched The Affair mostly because Ruth Wilson is such an amazing actor – I find her utterly, intensely, movingly convincing, especially on stage – and, okay, I confess is a massive crush of mine. At least, I watched Season 1 and was disappointed by the non-ending. I’ve heard Season 2 is more satisfying. Is that true? Is it worth committing to?
I will definitely be watching Sarah Jessica Parker in Divorce as soon as possible, because it’s created by Sharon Horgan – my comedy hero since Pulling and everything else she’s done right up to the recent Catastrophe. It’s so rewarding to see her hitting the big time.
Season 2 is a bazillion times better then season 1! Maury Tierney is fantastic in portraying the heartache and fallout from ‘the affair.’ #teamHelenSolloway all the way!
Totally down with the Pacey crushing but we bailed on The Affair after the first series. The two main characters are so annoying! I just wanted them both to die so everyone else could get on with their lives without them. Plus I can’t bear the fake Anerican accents. The only thing that made it bearable was the occasional Joshua Jackson topless shot!
I adored the first season (partly down to a HUGE Dominic West crush) but the second is so disappointing! Everything I loved about the first doesn’t work in the second and it all feels a bit forced.
HOW can you have a crush on dominic west with his funny crunched monkey face??? xxxx
With you on Dominic West – McNulty! Not so much when he was Fred West, which was a relief.
ha ha! omg imagine…
I have a friend (he’s Canadian) who is friends with Joshua Jackson. They grew up together apparently and their families were close. I was a bit young for ‘Dawson’s Creek’ I can’t remember it, but my young cool aunt was a fan. But if it wasn’t for Diane Kruger (good actor!) I wouldn’t really know who he was.
God I miss Dawson’s Creek! (and Party of Five for that matter)- they don’t make ’em like they used to.
I too have managed to totally miss the Affair bandwagon – think it might now be a box set marathon situation..

get on the bandwagon!! it’s good stuff xxx
I love, love, love this show! I was totally hooked from episode 1… And yeah, DRAZIC. I mean Heartbreak High in general… Although no one beats JORDAN CATALANO. Dreamy McDreamerson.
I binge watched The Affair while I was in labour. A nurse came into my room during the bit where they first have sex in the charming inn and asked me if I was watching porn! I was enjoying it so much that it was quite annoying when I had to stop watching to have the baby.
I love this
