Only for my kids would I forgo buying this extremely good coat from Uniqlo.
I was in High Street Kensington begging seeing my friend Emma for work lunch and I was very early on purpose, hoping to bump into some of my old buddies at the Evening Standard, whose offices are just there, and also to have a quick poke round the shops.
The result was that a) Cos is amazing at the moment and b) this Del Boy coat from Uniqlo is very nice and good value at £99 and c) some joke about the Evening Standard that I can’t quite summon up the wit to make.
But the girls on the till at Uniqlo were not quick enough and I left without buying it because I had to peg it back to Kentish Town in time to fetch Kitty from school. The journey from HSK to KT is no joke and I only just made it back in time.
I suppose I can now easily buy the coat online, and I probably will because it will be a very useful coat this Autumn, but I just wanted to point out that I actually put the coat down in the shop and walked out without it, because of my dedication to not ever being late for my kids. That’s how much I love them.
Nice, do they do this or similar in navy? I’m on hunt for a navy Autumn coat this year. That late feeling, when you think your child will be the last one sitting there waiting for you is just bleeeurgh😓
I’d take that as a sign you couldn’t love the coat enough …..
Kensington / Notting Hill are a real schlep unless you actually live in west London.
Nice! I bought a peacoat in the Westfield branch on Saturday, they fly off the shelves as soon as they come in.
Now it’s not quite cold enough to wear it, but we all know it WILL be soon. Uniqlo have nicked M&S basics business for sure.
Soon there will not be a single person in England who doesn’t own an item of Uniqlo puffa. Like stuff from Ikea.
Yes, my God, buy it before it sells out! I had a similar one which was bought on a whim and turned out to be Most Useful Coat Ever; early-onset-middle-age-ginormous-random-boobs syndrome meant I have tried and failed to replace it twice now and I like neither coat as much as the first.
See, I reckon (childless, heartless) the children would still be waiting but the coat might not …..

Oh gosh Sophie is this a thing? I thought I just needed to cut down on the carbs for a bit and I would stop looking so matronly. The wrong coat these days can leave me looking like a nana, minus the shopping trolley…
Well, I put on quite a lot of weight when I left London and grew huge boobs- I mean from B-cup to E-cup huge; the weight is less of an issue for me but the boobs are really inconvenient (and my husband is a legs man, not a boobs man). I don’t wear shirts any more, wrap dresses make me look like a titty sausage in a housecoat, and it is hard to find a smart coat that does up … on the plus side, good tailoring is your friend and polo shirts are a godsend, and when you DO find a good coat you must seize it and re-mortgage if necessary, but it will be worth it. Or search eBay for Max Mara. Same for bras, which can work miracles.
Oh, and (sounding like every mother, everywhere) stand up straight!!
Or buy some nice sensible lace-ups and a flowery trolley and embrace your inner granny…

And have just realised I didn’t actually answer Gina’s question: yes, I think a sudden inflation of chest does happen in middle age, if you put on weight. I doubt anyone who still possesses a waist need worry too much.
