Black hair ribbon

Okay don’t all have a freak out at my suggesting you wear a black velvet or grosgrain ribbon in your hair alright?? It’s just a suggestion. It looks cute, it’s quite Christmassy and all the fashion girls are doing it. And I know we’re not fashion girls but we can pretend we are for an evening.

Do not under any circumstances try this with a silky or satin ribbon because it will slide right out of your hair in 3 minutes flat.

Here is some inspo I stole off Pinterest for you.

But do you put a band underneath or does the ribbon do all the work? Also, where to buy???

Hobbycraft, John Lewis, anywhere with haberdashery…

I’m liking this very much. Put a band underneath ,then thread the ribbon through the band and the ribbon will stay in place

I think this looks really pretty and would be dead easy to do. It would have to be a nicely styled, bouffy-type ponytail though, or you might risk looking like a bedraggled idiot with a shoelace in her hair.

I love this! It’s a bit Old West. Nothing ever stays in my hair, but I might try it.

Love the word ‘haberdashery’, I always read it as being shrieked by someone. HABERDASHERY FORTHWITH!

It is a bit Old West, a bit Ballet Shoes but mostly rather Adam Ant. Love it.

May I humbly recommend getting some of those invisible no snag hair bands to secure the ponytail and popping a ribbon over the top? That way you can get the ponytail just right (pulling out loose tendrils, pulling at the roots for volume etc) and the band will hold it and won’t effect the ribbon. I tried to do this without a hair band underneath last week and my fine shitty hair fell flat in minutes *hurumph*

These look very pretty – I’ll bear this in mind.

Out of interest, what are your thoughts on hair accessories for children? My daughter has just asked to have long hair (she currently has a jaw length bob) and realistically I will need to get something to tie it up. Is there any simple, classic solution that doesn’t look twee? I’m not terribly keen on bows on little girls.

Can I interfere and recommend pigtails? Supremely excellent on all girls and particularly good if you have a daughter with throwback Sarah Miles frizz (genetics blow my mind!) as it won’t tangle like a blasted ponytail. Plus, it looks lavish, without having to get into a sweat over a French plait, which I’m crap at. You can put bows at the end or just bog-standard hair bobbles.

Oh god I just use anything to hand… most often Scunci invisibobbles, because they snag a bit less than other bands x

Not helpful but in my experience whatever she will tolerate. My daughter won’t have ponytails but will wear an Alice band to keep it out of her face. Sometimes a loose plait with a covered band. Anything shiny though slides right off her hair.
