If you, like me, have a small child who refuses to wear anything except full, matching, pristine football strip even on the coldest days this fair country has to offer, you may be familiar with “skins”.
These are close-fitting, long underwear, usually black, designed to keep today’s young football/sports fanatic warm when it is sub-zero and yet they must rep Arsenal in full colours or all hell will break loose.
I had a swan about in various sporting outlets for some suitable technical “skins” for a 5 year old and just sort of got lost in a sea of unknowable sizes – will a “Jnr S” fit Sam? Or is he more a “Jnr M”?
And I found myself, digitally, at Uniqlo in their excellent unisex Heat-Tech department. I bought for Sam two polo necks and some leggings.
They arrived and they are completely faultless – soft, stretchy, easy to put on; warm but not too warm because when those kids start zooming about they don’t half generate some heat.
Size 5-6 fit my average-sized 5-6 year old perfectly with some room to be more 6 than 5. If you know that your child is slight compared with their classmates, maybe size down.
I am in love with Uniqlo… the merino cardigans, the activewear and their super light down jackets
I just bought some of these on Friday from said sporting outlets. I bought 2 sizes as just had no idea, luckily the smaller ones fit as they only take store credit. My son was the last one standing without them, he would still be in shorts to school now if he could.
what is wrong with them? Sam genuinely does not feel the cold
Don’t bother buying him a coat when he gets to 12/13. He will NEVER wear it.
LOL! I love that from all your years of parenting experience this is the key piece of advice that sticks out
Thanks, I was looking for exactly this online this morning. Ordered immediately. The polo & leggings are 👌 for my little boy in his new ballet class which is held in a drafty hall. He didn’t want a leotard or anything pink, purple or sparkly. Black all the way.
Please invite me to the first night when he is principal in all-male Swan Lake. Thanks. xxx
I have the adult ones of these, I’ve had them for about 8 years and they’re still in perfect condition despite regular wear.
Never thought of Uniqlo for skins (with 2 football mad boys, there’s about 97 in the wash at any one time). I usually drag them to Hell On Earth (i.e. the one that rhymes with Shorts Dissect.)
