While I’m at it – I ought to tell you about the podcast I am doing with Giles. It’s not a Spike podcast but you might enjoy it anyway.
It’s called “Giles Coren Has No Idea” and the premise is that it is the story behind his Saturday column – where the ideas come from (me) and what jokes to make about them (him).
The Times wanted Giles to do a podcast but it was difficult to find a format – there are so many talking-heads and celebrity interview podcasts around already it seemed pointless to try and do a copycat thing… plus with three columns a week to write and his insistence on doing loads of childcare, the admin that would be required from Giles to set up a weekly celebrity interview was kind of out of the question.
So I suggested a behind-the-scenes thing about his column with me as a sidekick as I am always available and already on the payroll. We record on a Wednesday and the podcast comes out on a Friday – you can then read what Giles eventually decided to write in his column online at around 5pm on the same Friday. You could if you wanted, listen to the podcast and then immediately read the resulting column.
As a newspaper obsessive I obviously think it’s beyond cool to be able to see where jokes came from, which ideas were rejected and why. I used to have a short recording of a conversation in the writer’s room at Blackadder and I listened to it over and over again – so that’s how they did it, that’s how it got made.
You can find the podcast on iTunes or Spotify or wherever else you get your podcasts. If you don’t know what a podcast is or how to listen to one, ring a helpful nephew or niece.
I mean, I’ve got to say that the first episode, which is the only one we’ve done, is a bit patchy. We were a bit unprepared and freaked out and might have had a few drinks the night before.
But the next one, which comes out this Friday, we are going to be ON IT.
I have had a few people asking me why my picture and name aren’t more prominent on this podcast and it’s because I don’t want them to be. This is Giles’s thing, not mine and I’m just helping him out. If I wanted to be more visible on it, I would only have to ask – so I appreciate your concern but don’t worry it’s not yet another example of the patriarchy being a douche.
I am hoping that we will eventually be able to have some guests on, because I think it would be funny. Giles is a little resistant to the idea but he will agree with me in the end, because he usually does.
Listened and loved it. Perfect partnership.
The memories of my grown up four children’s sports days brought back so well!
Actually snorted at your impression of Her Maj. What a dream team you two are ❣️
Insistence at doing more child care … I keep on reading that ….. how times have changed. Lovely daddy great husband …oh and yes I look forward to listening
Made me laugh … you’re spot on Esther …
It was laugh out loud funny and obviously pretty spontaneous and natural (or you are GREAT actors!). It is always heart warming to hear couples who make each other really laugh. Looking forward to the next one.
I shall definitely have a listen. I hope it lives up to my current podcast of choice – ‘My Dad Wrote A Porno’ which I’m finding to be a great companion to ‘couch to 5km’ especially with Jo Wiley’s voiceover popping up in the middle of some action…
it almost certainly won’t
Well at least I won’t look plod along smiling like a fool and intermittently howling to myself…the other night I’d even accessorised with a pack of bacon that I’d bought from the supermarket mid-run…
Just listened – hugely entertaining – thank you!
I thought it was hilarious and have debated the sports day photo finish evidence with A LOT OF MUMS.
I MEAN WHAT DO YOU DO?!?!?
I listened and really enjoyed it. If you are that bright and chirpy after a few drinks the night before, I am seriously impressed.
it was a struggle. we both really lost confidence suddenly about 15 minutes in. luckily we have a very good producer who stitched it all together
is it available on Stitcher or Youtube? not really a fan of either spotify or itunes
oh dear I’m afraid it’s not 🙁
It is available on the Castbox app. Just search fro Giles Coren and it pops up. If you subscribe to the Times it is also there in their podcasts. Hope that helps!
thanks for that info. not really looking at another app lol. I only buy the Times on saturday 4 columnists and the jumbot2 crossword it last me all week. 🙂
maybe you could suggest it to the producer, the more places you are available you easier it is to find. unless they are soley going for the ratings side of itunes
Oh
I’m laughing out loud .. queens voice…. hilarious Mr & and Mrs ripper… dead funny I’m saving it as I need to finish repairing the massive & expensive but now ripped and full of holes sun umbrella.
I’m going to also rejoin with a different name as I feel daft talking to you as I’m so old I should be in the garden century drinking tea.
Race ….same here …. Allanah won but was placed last
So her mum my lovely lulu did appeal most annoying. Must go
Loved it too though perhaps your producer could dial down the breakfast noises!
It was funny, I liked it!
You clearly need to be hungover each time you record it! Loved the quick wit between you both
Listened and loved it ~ you are laugh out loud funny! You didn’t sound in the least hungover…
